1/31/2024 0 Comments Anowon the ruin thiefI also run a few stax pieces to try to prevent my deck from enabling others too much, protect myself, and slow down the "I draw my deck" deck in my pod. I run a pretty heavy disruption package as well between counters and stuff like ] to protect my combos and deny or prevent big plays. To shore up Anowon's weaker areas, like his ability being a 'draw maybe', I run a cantrip package. It takes advantage of unblockable rogues to get in and trigger Anowon's ability, and wins via an infinite combo or a few strong synergies or spells that can help close out the game. I run a combo deck for him, which I really enjoy, and it borrows from a few different themes to shore it up. The reason I didn't include mill as a viable strategy is because it is just not good in Anowon because he really doesn't care about mill the mill condition is really just a nerf to his draw condition. Reanimator is more midrange than anthem, so it is more steady, but its power varies and there are much better reanimators in dimir. Anthem can be very aggressive, but it's weak to board wipes, and it can run out of gas if you don't hit a coastal piracy effect to keep pressuring the board. Combo is just combo, so it's always good. I do think that, out of the 3, the best to worst are combo, anthem, and reanimator. However, this can be inconsistent due to possibly not hitting a creature. Combo - leverage anowon's ability for extra draw to get combo pieces.Anthem - pump rogues up with lord effects and equipment and swing for lethal.Room for it to be busted or weak depending on what you end up milling. Reanimator / Grave theft - enabled by his ability and other cards like Sphinx's Tutelage, you can try to nab stuff from people's graves.From what I can tell, there are around 3 'viable' strategies for Anowon: I'm a pretty big fan of Anowon and dabbled in multiple strategies until I settled on one. The chances of getting a maximum of 3 draws are pretty low when it's all said and done, so stuff like seas is best in decks that can cycle or wheel effectively. Based on some very rough math, if those are all decks that run an average of 25 creatures, you'd have ~44% chance to hit a creature. You need 3 rogues that don't get blocked to attack each opponent, then you need to hit a creature in the mill. □Ĭlick here to read over 4,000 more MTG Cards of the Day! Daily Since 2001.Just in regard to ominous seas, that's not a very good payoff in Anowon as you have to jump through so many hoops. He scales nicely to multiplayer as a consequence of how he’s worded (for each player that mills a creature card, you get to draw a card), but I think he’s far too fair for utility outside of Commander and casual settings, if for no other reason than mill being a complete disaster in Legacy and Vintage and him coming down too late for a card that doesn’t auto-win the game on his own. While mill is oft a double-edged sword, you can get a lot of mileage out of it (and black is the color with some of the best graveyard hate, so there is that!), and the desire to go wide means that the power and toughness buff to all other Rogues is welcome. Rogue tribal is back again Anowon offers a fair bit to the player who wants to use sneaky tricks to get their Rogues popping. Anowon, the Ruin Thief is in the Zendikar Rising Commander subset he’s not part of the proper set, and so he’s only legal in the Eternal formats and Commander.
